When you’re a dancer, you need to be fit. Nailing choreography isn’t as easy as memorizing it in your mind. You need to make sure your body can keep up with the routines you intend to perform. What you do outside of dance class and practice is just as important as what you do in the studio. For many of us, that means going to the gym. Here are some of the workouts we recommend to keep you in tip top shape for dancing, no matter what style of dance you do:
1. Strength training
Strength training is essential for dancers to build the muscles needed for power and stability. Focus on exercises that target the core, legs and glutes, such as squats, lunges, planks and deadlifts. Start with a weight that challenges you without hurting you, and remember to keep building up the weight over time.
2. Pilates
Pilates is a great workout for dancers as it helps improve flexibility, balance and core strength. Incorporate exercises like the hundred, the teaser and the side plank to target the muscles that are crucial for dancing.
3. Ballet-inspired workouts
Ballet-inspired workouts, such as barre classes, are excellent for building the muscles used in dancing. These workouts focus on elongating and strengthening the muscles in the legs, core and arms, helping dancers achieve grace and fluidity in their movements.
4. Cardio
Cardiovascular exercise is important for dancers to build endurance and stamina. Activities like running, cycling, and jumping rope can help improve cardiovascular fitness and keep dancers in top shape for long rehearsals and performances.
5. Yoga
Yoga is a fantastic workout for dancers, as it helps improve flexibility, balance and strength. Poses like downward dog, warrior II, and tree pose can target the muscles used in dancing and also improve mental focus and relaxation.
By doing a variety of workouts that target the areas needed for dance, you can grow as a dancer while building strength.
