Color guard can be physically and mentally demanding, but the rewards of getting a routine down make it all worthwhile. Like any sport, there are many safety considerations to take into account when performing in color guard. Here are a few tips. Stay Hydrated You need to be hydrated during performances; dehydration can cause everything from brain fog to muscle cramps. You also need to stay hydrated when traveling, especially in new climates. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to a performance and during practices. This will help your body perform at its best when it’s showtime. Wear Sunscreen Color guard requires spending significant time in the sun. Even if you’re working on your tan, it’s important to wear sunscreen during practices and performances. Sun exposure doesn’t just cause painful burns; excess exposure to UVA and UVB light also causes skin cancer in the long term if you don’t protect yourself. Tape Exposed Metal Metal pieces like swivels, rifle screws and strap screws can be really sharp on bare hands. Use electric tape to cover up these parts so you don’t end up cutting yourself on your equipment. The sharpness of exposed metal is even worse in colder temperatures, so this is especially important for winter guard. It wouldn’t hurt to make sure there are no loose parts on your props, as well, so you don’t have to worry about accidental projectiles. Get Techniques Down Practice doesn’t just make “perfect;” it also makes performing safer. Since performances take place over several months, it helps to practice outside at different times so you’ll know what to do in rainy, windy or snowy weather. The more you know how your equipment will behave in different situations, the better prepared you will be. Don’t Stand Too Close to Teammates You may not be able to avoid close proximity during performances, but when you’re practicing, make sure you’re not too close to other people. Check the area where you’re practicing to ensure that no one is within throwing distance, in case you make a mistake with your props. Also keep your distance from others when they’re practicing and you’re taking a break. When practiced safely, color guard performances can wow crowds and reward participants.
