Baton twirling is more than just a fun skill to show off to your friends. It’s a serious sport that allows twirlers to compete with other athletes from around the world. Our country has produced some great baton twirlers, many of whom win medals in international competitions. Kylee Saltzman of Florida won a gold medal in 2019 at the World Baton Twirling Federation’s Grand Prix. In her two-baton routine, she did not drop either baton once. Kylee often drops her baton while practicing, but she made sure not to let it fall when her dream was on the line. She also won silver and bronze medals at the International Cup in France the same year. The most nerve wracking performance for her, however, was twirling in front of her peers as a high school majorette. Kylee’s mother, Amanda, is also a baton twirler who coaches a girls’ twirling team in Niceville. She brought Kylee to classes as a baby, then encouraged her to pursue twirling herself. Laney Puhalla from Tennessee won a gold medal in the 2018 World Baton Twirling Championships and the WBTF Junior Women’s Competition. That same year, she also became Miss Majorette of America and the 2018 Senior Grand National Twirling Champion. During her time at University of Tennessee, she started as a majorette and performed as a Feature Twirler in the 2019-2020 school year. She now runs a YouTube channel, where she shares “Flip Tip Friday” baton twirling lessons and interviews with budding young baton twirlers. She continues to win competitions and use her talents to promote charitable causes. Savannah Miller, who won the silver medal at the 34th World Baton Twirling Championships, started twirling when she was 3 years old. Since then, she has won more than 30 national championships, 17 international gold medals and two collegiate championships. Her 2018 performance to an a cappella rendition of “Amazing Grace” went viral online, amassing over 3 million views. Now a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, she continues to pursue her baton-twirling passion and shares her talents as a performer and baton teacher. We encourage baton twirlers to pursue their passions, whether they become international superstars or just twirl the baton to reach their fitness goals.
