There’s nothing more exciting than seeing people who have a passion for baton twirling on the news. Recently, two high school students, Philippa Martin and Emily Jansen, were in the spotlight for giving exceptional performances. Starline Baton would like to share about each of the girl’s memorable performances.

Philippa Martin flew to Italy recently to represent England in the European Baton Twirling Championships. At age 17, Martin is currently the national champion in her age group for both solo and duet baton twirling. Beginning at just age 3, in the hopes of making it in the top six this year, she was placed fourth for solo and seventh for duet the previous year. Her performances require extensive amounts of training and practice as each routine is two and a half minutes long. With no room for error, Martin hopes to present a perfect performance.

Just as talented, Emily Jansen went above and beyond regular baton twirling by performing a fiery baton routine at her high school’s football game. Although she has only been twirling for a little less than two years, she is one of the few who have attempted and succeeded in working with three batons lit on fire. Because most twirlers have not attempted to perform with fire, it’s no surprise that her mother was so nervous that she missed Jansen’s first performance. Jansen hopes to accomplish twirling four fire batons by next year. Although it is a dangerous attempt, she has never gotten into any serious injuries. Instead, performing in front of an audience helps her focus more, thus giving a successful and confident routine each time.
