When you have different students from year to year going through your baton twirling studio, it can be difficult to find ideas that will inspire each class. After years of teaching baton twirling, you may notice that you’re hearing a lot of the same songs or seeing very similar performances. So, how do you make sure you don’t do the same thing over and over for your own classes? Try changing up the theme! Here are a few ideas to get you started: Fantasy What does fantasy mean to you? Dragons and wizards? Fairies and elves? There are several areas to explore within the fantasy world. As you get to know your students, it will be pretty clear whether they want to play the princesses or the knights in shining armor. Fantasy themes are sure to impress with all their colors, sparkles and otherworldly wonder. Movies While your newer students might not know their favorite baton moves yet, they’ll definitely know their favorite movies! Ask around to see what movies everyone enjoys, and make a routine based around their favorite movies or genre. Or, if you want to get really creative, make it all about old Hollywood and the movie theater experience. People love to watch movies, and they’re sure to be impressed by your interpretation. Adventure Are your twirlers on the high seas trying to find the island with the buried treasure? Maybe they’re deep in the jungle, exploring new places and finding new plants and animals all around them. Tell a story of real-world adventure with your baton twirling routine. The story can take place in one environment to keep the theming consistent and the costume changes at bay. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, consider taking the audience on a quest through different environments! Stardom There are many ways your students can shine. While not every performer sees stardom as the goal, it’s always nice to pretend. Create a routine based on real stars, like fashion, music and movie icons from then and now. Take your twirlers on a journey to their own stardom. There are so many ways this theme can be interpreted, and all of them will inspire audiences to find the stars inside of themselves.
