Baton twirling is entertaining to watch and can be fun to learn. However, it involves learning a lot of new skills and can be difficult to commit to, especially for beginners. Between hours of practice to get a twirling move just right, memorizing dance choreography and combining all the skills you learn, baton twirling can be as grueling as any other sport. Here are a few ways we recommend making baton twirling classes a little more fun, especially for the youngest twirlers. Change Up Warm Ups Warming up for a baton twirling session should involve static and dynamic stretches. However, there’s no one way to do these kinds of stretching exercises. Consider changing it up by adding Crossfit-inspired stretches to some classes and yoga-inspired stretches to another. Read the room, and make sure everyone is on board with the warm ups you’re doing. You can also try some acting warm ups, like telling one word stories, to get the class relaxed and comfortable before they go into learning and practicing routines together. Play Games When you have performances coming up, it never feels like you have enough time to play around. However, constant work tends to lead to burn out or loss of interest. You don’t need to spend the entire class time playing around. Taking a few minutes to play some improv games, puzzle games or even baton twirling-related games, like setting a timer to see how many times each member of your class can throw a baton and catch it. Give Recognition Baton twirling students work hard, and it always feels good to be recognized. Think of age-appropriate recognition that you can give your students. For younger students, a gold star sticker or a toy may be sufficient. For older students, a $5 gift card for their favorite food or even just verbal encouragement can go a long way. Let your students know you appreciate them and their hard work. Taking time to recognize students will encourage them to keep at it, even when it’s hard. Stay Consistent If students know what they’re going to get every time they go to class, they’ll be more likely to enjoy the experience. Every class doesn’t have to be exactly the same, but formatting classes in a consistent way will help your students thrive. Children who have consistency and know what to expect perform better and generally have less stress. These are a few great ways to break up the grind of baton class and keep your students motivated to shine. Looking for high quality batons and twirling accessories?
