Sports create opportunities for athletes in all areas of life. Baton twirling, which most people get into at a young age, can be especially rewarding. Physical fitness, community engagement and unique skills are just a few of the benefits. However, no matter how much someone loves twirling, fatigue is inevitable. Baton twirling can be physically, mentally and emotionally demanding. Here are our tips for preventing twirling fatigue: Rest Plenty and Eat Well Learning new tricks and routines requires serious discipline and lots of practice. Every once in a while, you may end up working longer than you meant to on that routine you’re looking to master. You may be so focused on one move that you’re practicing well into the night or forgetting to eat. Make time for yourself to rest and eat a balanced diet. If you nourish your body, you’ll be sharper and more focused when it’s showtime. Remember Why You Started Maybe your problem isn’t that you’re practicing too much. After practicing daily for years and not seeing the progress you expect, you may just be over it. When you start to experience burnout, think about why you started twirling. Your reasons for twirling may have changed over the years, but being mindful of where your passion began will help you get back on track. Repurpose Discouraged Energy Sometimes, you can be passionate about something but allow outside influences to get in your way. Family and friends may be annoyed that you spend most of your time practicing. Failures in performances may make you question your decision to continue trying. Take that energy and refocus it on your skills. You’ll be sure to see results. Take a Break If you’re completely exhausted, taking a break will help you come back stronger. If twirling the baton just isn’t for you anymore, you’ll know as soon as it’s not part of your routine. If you don’t miss twirling the baton after an extended break, don’t force it. Find out what you’re passionate about now, and go after it. It may involve some trial and error, and you may end up back where you started— doing the sport you always loved. Fatigue happens in all sports, and baton twirling is no exception. By allowing yourself to rest and remembering why you loved the sport, you can get out of a fatigue funk.
