Flexibility is key for baton twirlers so that they can execute certain skills in their routines. Here are just a few examples of stretches you can do as a baton twirler to increase your flexibility:
Legs: Sit down on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you and reach your arms out towards your feet. Try your best to face forward while executing this stretch, instead of putting your head down towards your knees. This will make for a more beneficial stretch.
Ankles: Sit on the floor with both of your legs out straight in front of you. Make circular motions with your ankles - for example, spell the alphabet with your ankles. This will ensure your muscles and joints are warm and get them used to movement.
Arms: Stretch each arm across your chest and hold it in place using your opposite arm. Hold for thirty seconds and repeat.
Fingers: From a fist position, slowly open your hand and stretch your fingers back as far as you can. Hold for thirty seconds and repeat. This stretch can also help with carpal tunnel syndrome.
As always, be cautious when stretching – do not attempt a stretch that your body is not ready to do. Instead, work up to this stretch by starting with complimentary stretches geared toward a lower skill level.
