Men and Baton Twirling

When you think of baton twirling, the first images that come to mind are likely to be majorettes and young girls in sparkly leotards. This is how we most commonly see baton twirlers today. Most of the participants in this sport are women and girls. Boys and men who twirl the baton are often seen as unicorns within their classes. Read on to learn about why that changed. Male Origins of Baton Twirling The origins of baton twirling have been reported to have come from a few different places. Some say twirling began among warriors on the Samoan Islands. Others say that Swiss flag twirlers inspired the sport. In America, the first baton twirlers juggled heavy batons while leading marching bands. Most, if not all, of the first baton twirlers were male. Passing the Baton Baton twirling was not always a female-dominated sport. In the 1930s and 1940s, most participants in baton twirling contests were men. Around that time, many men went off to war, and while they were there, women filled the vacant roles. This is what flipped the script, aligning baton twirling with femininity. Baton Twirling Unicorns While most sports traditionally lean male, a few, most notably figure skating, cheerleading and baton twirling, have a strong stereotype of being “for girls.” Boys and men who twirl the baton are often criticized by outsiders for their participation in a “girly” sport. They also have some difficulty being recognized by their coaches and teammates on the basis of their skills. However, by their fans, they’re often seen as a welcome rarity.
