Whether it’s your decision as a parent or your child requests to enter the world of competitive baton twirling, it can be a perplexing and unknown journey. Many people have seen or experienced both competitive and amateur baton twirling, whether it’s at a high school football game or on television. The truth is that it’s a whole different beast when you’re emerged in the world of competitive baton twirling. Rehearsal schedules and instructors can be grueling, demanding the best from students, and the awards and actual competitions are high stakes. Here are some things, as a parent, you should know before entering this foreign, but exciting, world.
Do What You Love. When it comes to an extracurricular activity, it’s imperative that your child actually enjoys it. When a child is enjoying the hard work and competitive nature that comes with a sport like competitive baton twirling, he or she is more likely to learn, grow, and appreciate the lifelong lessons that he or she will receive.
Get Experience. If your child is not used to taking lessons and/or being in a sport, you should start him or her in a recreational program versus a competitive program. Typically, entering a competitive baton twirling program will require an audition, and if your child does not have the fundamental knowledge and ability, he or she will not be able to audition successfully.
Get With a Program. Each studio’s and coach’s program will be different than the rest. Some programs are more intense than others, while some are more laid back. It’s important to know what you think your child is capable of in terms of competition, and also make sure you get his or her opinion as well. You want your, your child’s and your child’s instructors goals to align for an optimal experience.
