Baton twirling has become an increasingly popular sport throughout the world, especially upon the formation of the World Baton Twirling Federation, otherwise known as WBTF. The WBTF was organized in London in 1977 by the leaders of a variety of baton twirling organizations in different countries all over the world. The purpose of the formation of the WBTF is to develop, encourage, and standardize the sport.
The second meeting of the WBTF was held in Canary Island in 1978. The organizational leaders then developed and approved the bylaws of the federation, and the international rules of the competition were debated among the members.
The first World Demonstration of Baton Twirling was held on March 31, 1979 on the Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy. The estimated crowd attendance was around 10,000, and the spectators watched as the various athletes performed complicated baton twirling routines with precision and grace.
The final plans were completed in October of 1979 by Federation representatives in Paris, France for the World Championship of Baton Twirling, which brought together teams of baton twirlers from 10 different countries to compete. It was hosted in 1980 in Seattle Washington by the United States Twirling Association.
