We’ve had fun with baton twirling for decades here in the US, but did you know that it originated in Eastern Europe and Asia? The sport made its way to the United States after the Civil War era, and different organizations, like the World Baton Twirling Federation and the World Twirling Association, were created to promote the professionalism of baton twirling.
Since the orgin of baton twirling, many world records have been made and broken. Some current baton twirling world records include:
- Annetta Lucero holds the world women's record for the number of spins under a baton in 1996 with 10 spins.
- The world record for the most people twirling batons consisted of 1,012 participants in Bakel, Netherlands on 16 May 2004. All participants were registered majorettes from all over Holland.
- The most people twirling flags is 35,000 and was achieved by Coordinadora de Peñas de Valladolid in Plaza Zorilla, Valladolid, Spain, on 5 September 2010. The event was organized as part of Valladolid's week of fiestas.
The World Baton Twirling Record Book, sponsored by Star Line Baton Company Inc. and the WBTF, continues to contribute to the growth, development and progress made by the sport of baton twirling over the years. Baton twirling athletes have successfully raised the image of the sport to be recognized on an international level along with other Olympic sporting events. For all your batons and baton twirling accessories, check out our online baton twirling store at Star Line Baton.
