How to do an Amazing Bun

No matter if you are at baton twirling practice or competing on the stage, having a proper and secure bun can make all the difference. When it comes to baton practice, it is important to keep all your hair out of your face so that you can keep your eyes 100% focused on the baton. And when it comes to competing, the judges can actually take points off if your hair isn’t properly secured as your hair is an actual part of your complete look.

So, here are some steps that you can follow so that you can have the perfect bun when it comes to practice and competing:

  • Prep the Hair: Be sure that your hair is free of tangles and knots by brushing it good. Take some hairspray and spray all around your hair, but make sure that you don’t drench it; you still want it more on the dry side.
  • Place Your Ponytail: Using the type of brush that can really grab hair, such as a hard bristled one, start brushing all your hair into a ponytail into two elastics to make sure it really stays.
  • Create the Bun: Divide your hair into three sections, then take the first section and twist it and around the elastics, using bobby pins as you go. We recommend using more of the “U” shaped kind since it can grab more hair to secure. After you pin the first section around the elastics, then do the same with the next two sections, go round and round the ever-growing base of the ponytail.
  • Finish the Bun: After you twist all your hair around the elastics, use a hair net the same shade as your hair to keep that bun in place, properly securing the nets with a few bobby pins. This is the time when you can go crazy with the hair spray! Use it to make sure there are no flyaways that could show up through strenuous practices and competition.
